12-05-2006 :: A Vision
After two weeks of using a Linux Live System, started off a USB key and then running it entirely from RAM, I am sold. It is incredibly fast. Secure. A desktop for my needs. A beauty of simplicity. It is small and complete.
Enjoying the silence. It is open and free, and even better, it is free beer.
Why on this whole wide world would I need to install an Operating System and applications to my harddisk? To slow me down? To get in my way? To keep me busy with stupid tasks of configuring and cleaning and fixing stuff?
A vision. A CD is ugly, a LiveCD is old stuff, history, deprecated technology. An OS on a harddisk has seen the days. Download a 300 MB file, put it on your USB Flash drive or Minidrive. Run it. - You need a new challenge, you are curious after a few months, you are bored to death because you just can't damage it?
Get the new edition! A vision. Hundreds of different LiveUSB versions are out there. Your choice, your freedom. A web configurator to assemble just what you want.
It's all about lifestyle ;-)
30-04-2006 :: copy2ram - updated edition of MCNLive Leuven available
A new version of MCNLive Leuven is available. Besides some updates from the Community branch of MDV 2006 and some small fixes, I've finally succeeded in adding a new feature: copy2ram.
What is it? When booting with this cheatcode, the whole compressed system which resides inside the big livecd.sqfs file, is copied into RAM. The CD drive or the USB device (depends on what you are using) is freed up after the copying process is done.
How to use? - Requirements. You need at least 512 MB RAM to use this feature. At the initial graphical (isolinux) screen hit F1, at the boot prompt type: livecd copy2ram
You will see a message when the copying starts. Depending on the hardware, it will take some time. On my system, when using the LiveCD: 90 seconds, using a LiveUSB: 23 seconds.
After it has finished, you can remove the CD from the drive, which is now usable for other tasks. If you are booting from USB, you can unplug your stick or leave it where it is and use it as a normal storage device!
The advantages of copy2ram are remarkable. The system gets very fast, faster than fast. Accessing and loading something from RAM ! It is completely silent. CD drive or USB stick are freed.
Download MCNLive-Leuven_v2.iso (331,1 MB) at the
known ftp mirrors.
Make sure to pick the v2 .iso file !!
Note for people planning to put this version on a USB stick. Start the LiveCD once without copy2ram. Then use the grahical wizard to install it on the thumbdrive. Afterwards you can boot from usb with the cheatcode!
With this version I hope we have -almost- reached our goals. Deliver a complete desktop experience. Run it live. From USB thumbdrive or CD. Keep it small, fast and simple. Be friendly to the user.

28.09.05 :: A bug-fixed Xfce version on the mirrors
Another pre release has been uploaded and is available. Some network fixes, added missing xine-win32 and unzip packages,
the filemanager handles file extensions smarter and Opera is configured to work straight away with streams. Some minor cosmetic changes.
Still a -pre until the Official MDV mirrors are up.
24.09.05 :: "Jordaan" is doing fine
Originally planned as a test bed for the upcoming KDE version, you gave our sweet little Xfce edition such a warm welcome,
that I will work out the small glitches and bugs (for instance .mov files played without sound, I hate it when I keep forgetting to
install xine-win32) and will upload a new iso soon. Still awaiting reports about the big bugs. There must be some ;-)
A very helpfull review can be found on
tuxmachines.org.
Now, someone please tell me, how do I fix the fonts in the drop-down menues of the *static* Opera version? It looks like crap. I want nice fonts everywhere!

A FAQ about the LiveCD is so far only available in Dutch:
FAQ
22.11.04 sigh ;-)
I wonder if I am the only one thinking:
* Users never read howto's, documentation, info texts, readme files, no matter how userfriendly they are written
* Unlike animals users are into finding the most difficult way to solve fundamental problems. Give them a
Mandrake Control Center where you may click to configure your scanner, and yet they will start to compile obscure drivers
* Users just love to break their systems. Even on rock stable distribution they will find a way,
no matter how hard it might be, to get an unusable OS and unstable applications.
11.11.04 MCNL Crew ::
A LiveCD based on Mandrake 10.0 is now available as an iso to download.
It's around 282 MB, kde 3.2.3 (Kontact suite, Kde Edu, Apollon, Kaffeine, streaming radio and video working, Kopete, Konversation, KOffice, Kolourpaint and more), kernel 2.6.7, Firefox 1.0 final. Two languages, Dutch and English, default US-keyboard layout.
It was created for mandrakeclub.nl.
